 Retinal detachment may congenital [retinal detachment - congenital] or acquired and has many causes. Causes of congenital retinal detachment include toxoplasmosis, retinoblastoma, chromosomal anomalies [chromosomal disorder], persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous, Pierre Robin syndrome and Knobloch syndrome. Aquired forms of retinal detachment include rhegmatogenous retinal detachment [retinal detachment - rhegmatogenous], exudative retinal detachment [retinal detachment - exudative] and tractional retinal detachment [retinal detachment - tractional]. If not treated early the detachment can remain chronic [retinal detachment - chronic].
