Conditions that contribute to a retinal tear include vitreoretinal traction, trauma, lattice degeneration of the retina [lattice degeneration - retina], high myopia [myopia - high] with vitreous degeneration, disorders of the vitreous (vitreous detachment and mobility, syneresis, vitreoretinal adhesions and vitreous traction), Marfan syndrome, Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, homocystinuria, the hereditary hyaloideoretinopathies (Wagner syndrome, Stickler syndrome), and an intracapsular cataract extraction. A retinal tear can lead to retinal detachment.
